Color for the Color Blind

I had two questions recently from people seeing my work for the first time. First question was why print in black and white and she was very persistent in demanding an answer as if to question why even print in black and white. I told her black and white is color for the color blind. The second question was from a completely different angle claiming my work was somewhat inferior to black and white because I tone the prints. I told her my work is color for the color blind.

Years ago, when people found out I was very interested in photography and discovered I had at that time professional equipment would always ask me if I shoot children. I told them not only do I shoot children but I also eat them.

My answer to the questions were sarcastic but the questions were somewhat insulting and deserved the sarcasm. Sarcasm can result from extreme confidence in your vision for your work. Other people cannot create your vision nor can they be superior in their attitude that your vision is not pure or modern. Photography is a personal pursuit, an artistic endeavor that demands a certain ruthlessness.

Now I do understand that sarcasm is not a good business technique to garner business for your photographic pursuits, but I was self employed as a paint and finish contractor for over 30 years and photography for me was an escape from that business and dealing with customers who most of the times were so ignorant and completely unrealistic about what it takes to complete a high quality job, a job that would last for years. 90 percent of the time the customer was always wrong!!
